Aquatic Veil IV belongs to the St James’s set of eight: meditations on the lake’s underside, where water plants occupy a climate the visitor on the bridge never quite sees. This sheet is the most inhabited of the early numbers. Forms have weight.
A dark, spoon-shaped body of indigo-grey floats in the middle—pad, bladder, a leaf that has taken on water. Above it a stronger blue bar crosses the field, a current or a stem with more will. A vertical run drops through the centre and meets a faint cross near the base, the only moment the looking becomes a grid: observation laid over growth. Fragments occupy the corners—pointed leaves, a pale blade, a denser triangle—as if the underwater thicket continued beyond the paper. At the lower right a large, soft plane rises, almost a ghost of a leaf. At the lower left, a heavier swell, the bed asserting itself again.
The palette stays within the series: indigo, sky blue, soft grey. What changes is the density of lives. Intertwining is no longer only line. It is bodies sharing a volume. Resilience is the spoon-form that holds while its edge granulates. Interconnection is the bar that ties the fragments together without explaining them. The unseen beauty of the park’s ecosystem is still unseen; it is only this veil, and the paper acting as water.
Four, in a set of eight, is the first time the flora feel close enough to touch. The canal under Nash’s lake, the enclosure of the royal park, the city around it—all of that remains pressure, not picture. Down here there are only stems, drifting weights, and light.
